Addiction Is The New Normal

Moving through life as a high performer, I have always focused on more. As I have met more people like myself, I have seen similar patterns of consumption.

I recently read a study that outlines the paradox of addiction. The study showed how overeating now kills 2x as many people as malnutrition. How can that be? We have gone from a world where there wasn’t enough to eat to a world where too much food is making us sick.

Today you can find a support group for every type of overconsumption. Work, television, gaming, food, shopping, social media, exercise, internet, gambling, self-harm, love, sugar, pain, porn, and sex — to name a few.

The behavior of this consumption shows up in many ways. Repetition, routine, obsession, impulsiveness, rituals, immediate gratification, bingeing, and abstaining. These types of processes make addicts of us all. The question then becomes, what is your drug of choice?

You don’t have to be hooked on a substance to be an addict. More than likely, every one of us has an activity we are engaging in that is out of moderation.

What’s the cost of continuing said activity —in time, money, health, and relationships?
